Laada Bilaniuk is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington, and she has adjunct appointments in the departments of Linguistics, Slavic Languages and Literatures. She completed her Bachelor’s degree with a double major in anthropology and art at Yale University, and her PhD in anthropology at the University of Michigan.
She teaches courses on linguistic anthropology, language politics, the anthropology of the post-Soviet States, and the anthropology of popular culture. She is author of the book, Contested Tongues: Language Politics and Cultural Correction in Ukraine (Cornell University Press 2005), and she is currently working on a book on rock music and cultural activism in Ukraine. She has also published articles on language and gender in Ukraine, education, and the politics of language on Ukrainian television.
