Arturo C. Flores was born in Southern Chile in the rainy city of Valdivia. As the son of a mechanical engineer, he never felt called to his father’s profession. His first readings and his conversations with his teachers led him to decide to be a professor and, moreover, to teach literature, which he did in the secondary schools of the city while he was a university student. He received his BA at Universidad Austral in Chile and then began his graduate studies at the same university. Graduate school was interrupted with the start of the military government in 1973, a situation that obliged him to leave the country and pursue his studies at Arizona State University and The University of Arizona, where he obtained his Ph.D. en 1986. Since arriving at TCU in 1986, after a freezing year at the University of Wisconsin, Flores has taught language and literature. His areas of interest are Chilean literature, Chicano narrative and theater, and Latin American literature in general. He has published extensively in Europe, Latin America, and the US on the literary topics mentioned above. Apart from reading, his favorite hobbies are collecting foreign films and listening to music. In 2005 he was invited to Université de RENNES 2 in France where he served as commentator at their Film Festival. He currently coordinates the summer program at Seville, Spain.
