My research and teaching focus on seventeenth-century literature and culture. I am primarily interested in the intersection of religion and theater, and the ways in which this intersection not only bears upon the dramatic theory and practice, but also has broad epistemological consequences. In my current project, I explore how the performance of religious subjects upset the Aristotelian norms of theatrical representation by joining a spectacular narrative that defies reason with a poetic form that requires the logical succession of an inexorable course of events, and how this, in turn, was related to a rational assessment of the miraculous.
