Gordon Alexander received his PhD in finance in 1975 from The University of Michigan, where he also received a Master of Science in mathematics in 1973 and an MBA in finance in 1970. Previously he received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1969. He has held appointments as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California-Los Angeles, and the University of Auckland, and has been an Academic Economic Fellow at the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. His area of expertise is in portfolio theory and management and his current research focuses on short selling, risk management, market microstructure, and mutual funds. He has co-authored three books and published articles in academic journals such as the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, the Journal of Business, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Financial Intermediation, the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, the Journal of Financial Markets, the Journal of Corporate Finance, and Financial Management. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Finance, the Quarterly Journal of Finance, the Journal of Economics and Business, and The Financial Review. Previously he served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. In 2008-09 he was president of the Midwest Finance Association and in 1995-97 he was a director of the Financial Management Association, where he currently he serves as Vice-President Financial Education. In 2015 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Midwest Finance Association.
