Before joining Drexel, Professor Bernstein was the director of the Omer Poos Law Library at Saint Louis University, where he also was an assistant professor of law. He also was associate director and senior lecturing fellow at the Duke University Law Library. Bernstein's scholarship involves major shifts affecting the traditional model of legal education including the increase in practical skills courses, interdisciplinary research, joint degrees and specialized concentrations. He also studies the increasing role of librarians to educate faculty and students in using a new and wider array of legal resources. Professor Bernstein's publications include articles on the evolution of the law library, the impact of law specialization on library services and qualitative methods for evaluating the value of a library. In 2008, he won the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Spectrum article of the year award for his 2007 publication “One Size Fits All No More: The Impact of Law Specialization on Library Services.” Cognizant of the intersection between legal practice, research and technology, he directs the school's legal research center and supervises the technologies staff at the law school. He is an active member of AALL and, in 2011, co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee of the annual meeting held in Philadelphia. At Saint Louis University, Professor Bernstein chaired a Technology Advisory Committee, and at Duke University, he co-chaired the Implementation Committee for an Integrated Library System. He is a past chairman of the Consortium of Southeastern Law Libraries and of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section. Professor Bernstein earned his JD at Tulane University Law School.
