I grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University in 1966. I completed a master's in counseling at Rutgers in 1968 and then served in the Army Medical Corp for two years. I came to IU and completed my Ed.D. in counseling and guidance in 1973. I worked as the counseling consultant for the Indiana State Department of Education until 1976, when I joined the faculty at IU. I taught part time in the adult education department and counseling department at IU Bloomington, while serving in the School of Continuing Studies. I have served on the executive committee and board of directors of the National University Continuing Education Association. I have also served as president of my local school board and president of my local Rotary, and President of the Indiana Personnel and Guidance Association. I led an IU faculty team under a Ford Foundation Grant to deliver IU courses at a distance to students in South Africa to help overcome apartheid. I have a specific interest in the important roles of active listening and dialogue in adult education, because I believe that listening and dialogue are critical skills in teaching and learning. I want students to comfortably express and critically evaluate their opinions and beliefs and to translate their knowledge, understanding, and skills into practical application in adult education. As an instructor in the IU medical school physician-patient relationship course, I help teach students how to actively listen to patients I especially enjoy giving presentations and teaching others how to conduct training and give presentations. My wife Ruth and I have three children and eleven grandchildren. I like to swim, play golf, and paint using acrylics. I teach D500, D512, and D640.
