My current research focuses on habit, using historical and contemporary research in feminist theory, the critical philosophy of race, and virtue ethics. Alongside contemporary authors who focus on habit in order to reveal and disrupt biases and similar vices, I show that habit is not only a kind of action that can make us complicit with injustice and responsible for ignorance. For someone whose experiences are shaped by structural injustices, and marginalized minorities, it is important to develop an alternative account of habit, for the sake of resistance against injustice. I think of musical expertise – especially improvisation – as a model for moral reasoning. To develop this account, I also consider theories of embodied cognition and non-linguistic forms of expression (e.g. music, rituals) alongside historical and contemporary philosophical interpretations of habitual action in philosophy and the social sciences.
