Prof. Brown has also been directing “The Marking Graves Project”, a long-term study of the historic and modern cemeteries of Tuscaloosa County in Alabama, which has involved many graduate and undergraduate students. Prof. Brown is Curator of Gulf Coast Archaeology at the Alabama Museum of Natural History. Prof. Brown is a Distinguished Teaching Fellow (2004-07) of the College of Arts and Sciences, and he was also honored with the A&S Outstanding Commitment to Students Award in 2000. He was President of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference from 1992-94 and served three terms as Chair of the Society for American Archaeology National Historic Landmark Committee. Between 1999 and 2005 he also was a member of the National Historic Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board. Currently Prof. Brown is the President of the Association for Gravestone Studies.
