Professor Dessau’s research interests center around using electron spectroscopic tools for the study of the electronic structure, magnetic structure, and phase transitions of novel materials systems such as high temperature superconductors (HTSCs or cuprates), topological insulators, “heavy” quantum materials such as iridates, organic materials for photovoltaics, and colossal magnetoresistive oxides (CMRs or manganites). We made the first demonstration of Laser- ARPES (Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy) and our lab is home to the highest energy resolution and lowest temperature ARPES facility in the United States as well as to a unique femtosecond time-resolved ARPES system. We are also heavy users of advanced synchrotron instrumentation around the world for ARPES as well as other techniques such as X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Resonant X-ray Scattering.
