Gordon Chang’s interests are in two areas of American life that are often considered separately: the historical connections between race and ethnicity in America, on the one hand, and foreign relations, on the other. Some of the courses he is currently teaching include Introduction to Asian American History, History of U.S.-East Asia Relations, The History of United States-China Relations, from the Opium War to Tiananmen, America in the World, and America in the 20th Century. Chang was one of the founding members of the Asian American Studies Program at Stanford, and actually taught the first Asian American history course at Stanford in 1972 as a graduate student here. He has taught courses in Asian American Studies almost continuously since then. He is interested in the political and cultural dimensions of the Asian American experience and teaches courses in Asian American history.
