Lily Lamboy is a PhD student in the political science department at Stanford with concentrations in political theory, gender equality, American government and constitutional law. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree (highest honors) in Government and Ethics from Smith College in 2010. Her honors thesis, entitled “Her Body, His Choice? Comparing Men’s and Women’s Claims to Procreative Privacy”, carved out a legal and philosophical rationale for grounding abortion claims in a right to bodily integrity. As an undergraduate, Lily was a Leanna Brown Fellow in Women and Law and a Presidential Fellow with the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress.
As a doctoral student, Lily is pursuing research in several areas including the breadth and significance of bodily integrity claims in law, the role that upbringing plays in determining political and social attitudes, and ways to close the gender gap across multiple sectors. Before coming to graduate school, she worked for Teach For America and developed a rhetoric curriculum for the Reacting to the Past program in conjunction with Barnard College. She also directed the debate program at New York University. Her work on the gender gap is influenced by her time as a member of the college debate community, which is male-dominated. Based on her experiences, Lily founded the Women’s Debate Initiative, which offers mentorship, training and social opportunities for young women seeking to fill included and confident as debaters. She is also motivated by the work that she has done with individuals who face barriers to legal access, including her efforts as a constituent advocate for immigrants under Senator Ted Kennedy and her time doing social work with victims of domestic violence for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.
