Professor Abbott conducts research on both international trade and international agricultural development. He has taught courses on mathematical programming, international trade, agricultural development, macro economics and trade policy. Professor Abbott has consulted for several domestic and foreign government agencies, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, commissions on food policy issues, and private agencies. He has been on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics and the Journal of Development Economics. Professor Abbott served on the steering committees of the congressionally-mandated USDA study on Export Embargoes and Surplus Disposal of Agricultural Commodities, the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, regional research project NC-194, "Organization and Performance of World Food Systems," and the USDA-USTR Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Grains, Feeds and Oilseeds. He is also now conducting research on cocoa for IITA’s Small Tree Crops Program (STCP).
Professor Abbott's recent publications include: “Tariff Rate Quotas: Failed market Access Instruments?” European Review of Agricultural Economics (2002), “Coming to Grips with Globalization,” Choices (2001), “Wheat-Importing State Trading Enterprises: Impacts on the World Wheat Market”, Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (1999) “Agricultural Commodity Production and Trade: A Trade Economist’s View on Filling U.S. Food Supply Gaps,” Food Policy (1999), “International Entry Mode Decisions by Agribusiness Firms: Distribution and Market Power,” American Journal of Agricultural Economics (1998), "Implications of Game Theory for International Agricultural Trade," American Journal of Agricultural Economics (1996); "Firm-Level Competition in International Markets: The Impact of the Export Enhancement Program," Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (1996); "Further Evidence on Competition in the US Grain Export Trade," Journal of Industrial Economics (1994) and numerous other publications on international agricultural trade. Four of his students have won national awards for the quality of their dissertations.
