A professor of literary history with specialization in the areas of Modern and Contemporary Spanish literature and culture, Ignacio Javier López is the current chair of the department of Spanish, a position in which he has served for more than a decade. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Hispanic Review and served as General Editor of the journal from 1997 until 2006. His research deals with topics on Romanticism, the modern period, Surrealism (Prados, Dalí and Buñuel), and Spanish Post-modernity. His books on the modern novel of Spain include: Caballero de novela (1986); Realismo y ficción (1989); Galdós y el arte de la prosa (1993); Pedro A. de Alarcón (2008); and, La novela ideológica, 1875-1880 (2014). He prepared critical editions with extensive introductory studies of Emilia Pardo Bazán’s La madre Naturaleza (1992), Emilio Prados’Jardín cerrado (1995), Guillermo Carnero’s Dibujo de la muerte (1998, revised 2nd ed.2010), Benito Pérez Galdós’ Gloria (2011), and Pedro A. de Alarcón’s El escándalo (2012) and El Niño de la Bola (2013). In his 2012 Revolución, Restauración y novela, he published La novela de Luis, a long-lost “Krausista” novel by S. de Villarminio. Before coming to Penn he taught at the University of Virginia. He had visiting appointments at Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Villanova, and Bryn Mawr.
