Joe Weixlmann served as SLU's Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences (2001-2002), then as the University's Provost (2002-2009), before returning to the English faculty. Between 1976 and 2004, he edited the quarterly journal African American Review and received the 2005 Distinguished Editor Award from the Conference of Editors of Learned Journals in recognition of that work. In 2008, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Canisius College. Weixlmann has received grants from the NEH, NEA, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, among others.
