Jennifer is an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design where she teaches architectural design studio and support classes exploring issues of materiality, construction, and special topics of professional practice. Her research studios have explored issues of urban agriculture as a study of buildings as ecosystems. She holds a Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University (2002) and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia (1998). Jennifer and her husband Adan run an industrial design firm called Akerworks, Inc. committed to developing modern objects and instruments as an exploration of the relationship between design, material, and craft. Their practice, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a venue for using design and fabrication as a means of creating products that push beyond convention. Recent projects have ranged from custom-fabricated spinning wheel bobbins to electric baritone ukuleles.
