Oscar U. Somoza earned his PhD in Spanish from the University of Arizona, with a specialization in Latin American literature and culture and a minor concentration in Luso-Brazilian language and literature. Oscar has been active in the areas of teaching, scholarly research and community outreach. His participation in these areas has given him the opportunity to stay informed on innovative teaching techniques and learning methodologies in his fields of specialization. Oscar finds great value in reaching out to his community, and encourages his students to do the same. With this goal in mind, Oscar initiated a program at DU called Internship in Spanish: Working With Community Organizations. This program provides his students with the opportunity to integrate their cultural and linguistic skills in the world beyond the DU campus. He strives to give his students the chance to engage in direct experiences related to the rich history and culture of the Spanish-speaking population. He has received the United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award, and has been selected as "Top Professor" by Mortar Board. He was also nominated for U.S Professor of the Year, an award sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation.
