Professor Beer specializes in comparative politics and Latin American politics. Her research interests include democratization, institutions and women in politics. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and the Latin American Institute of the University of New Mexico. She was recently awarded a Fulbright-Hayes Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship. She was a Research Fellow at the University of California, San Diego, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies during the spring 2011 semester. Her book, Institutional Change and Electoral Competition in Mexico, was published by the University of Notre Dame Press in 2003. She has also published in journals such as Comparative Politics, the American Political Science Review, Comparative Political Studies, Latin American Research Review, Latin American Politics and Society, Studies in Comparative International Development, and International Studies Quarterly.
