Lena Hill, Associate Professor of English and African American Studies, teaches courses on nineteenth & twentieth century African-American literature, American literature and drama, and visual culture. She is particularly interested in the ways writers engage visual culture to characterize the complexity of American identity. Her current book project examines the role of visual art aesthetics in African-American literature from the late eighteenth to the midtwentieth century. She co-authored Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man: A Reference Guide (Greenwood, 2008), and her article, “The Visual Art of Invisible Man: Ellison’s Portrait of Blackness,” which appeared in American Literature in 2009, has helped to spearhead a series of campus-wide events, as well as a stage adapataion of Ellison's novel.
