Rebecca received her MA in Deaf Cultural Studies from Gallaudet University in 2011. Prior to that she studied business at the University of Iowa, graduating with a BBA in Marketing and a minor in American Sign Language. Her interests in advertising and Deaf Studies inspired her to research the varied representations of Deaf individuals and American Sign Language in the media. The title of her thesis is, “American Sign Language and the Desire to Buy: A Study of ASL in TV Advertisements”. As an undergraduate, Rebecca worked for Camp Adventure affording her the opportunity to work and live on a US military base in Naples, Italy and Wiesbaden, Germany. In graduate school traveling opportunities continued to present themselves. While most of her time at Gallaudet was spent on campus in Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2011 she joined a group of three other graduate students to study abroad in Norway. She took remote Gallaudet courses in Aal, Norway while living on the Aal Folkehoeyskole og Kurssenter for Doeve campus, a Norweigan school for the Deaf. After graduation, Rebecca stayed in Norway to work as an intern for the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). The internship concluded with attendance and participation at the World Federation of the Deaf World Congress XVI in Durban, South Africa. Rebecca is currently a lecturer in the University of Iowa ASL Program. She teaches a variety of courses, including American Deaf Culture: Exploring Deaf Gain and Deaf Representations in the Media.
