I like maps. I like to interpret them and invent new ways to make them more effective in communicating geographical relationships. And I also enjoy using computers to create new ways of analyzing information that is derived from maps and coordinates. Maps are important and maps are cool. You should learn to like them too. Some of my general areas of academic inquiry are focused on the visualization of quantitative data using thematic maps, analyzing computationally-complex geographical problems using high performance computers, and examining various facets of what is now becoming known as geo-privacy. I have secondary interests in the history of cartography and geographic information systems. Prof. Armstrong was named a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Collegiate Fellow in 2005.
