My work questions the ways in which places shape, reflect, and respond to politics, memory, and society. I specialize in popular American architecture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a particular focus on the ubiquitous Colonial Revival. My recent and upcoming publications examine the popular memory of Mount Vernon, the Virginia plantation of George and Martha Washington. In other ongoing projects, I am considering: the role of Tara (the plantation at the center of Gone with the Wind) in shaping popular understandings of the plantation in the mid-20th century the intersection of Modernism and the Colonial Revival in popular American decorative arts and architecture of the 1920s-30s architecture, landscape, and social history at the Bull Street campus of the former South Carolina State Hospital the historiography of American architecture
