Sarah Barker is an internationally known expert in the Alexander Technique and has worked professionally as a movement coach and choreographer for over 70 productions. Her most recent research agenda concerns the efficacy of the Alexander Technique in improving balance and presence. She received her MFA in Performance from Southern Methodist University, 1974. She was trained to teach the Alexander Technique by Marjorie Barstow 1971-1978. She is currently Associate Professor of Theatre Movement and Acting in the Department of Theatre and Dance at University of South Carolina. She has served as head of two graduate degree programs for actors: first at the University of Pittsburgh and then for six years at University of South Carolina. She was also Head of Movement Training for Webster University's BFA acting program and produced the American Movement Institute for six years while there. She has served on the board of University/Resident Theatre Association and serves as one of their program reviewers.
Sarah is Past-President of the Association of Theatre Movement Educators. She currently heads the Editorial Board for ATME’s Digital Journal. As a certfied member of Alexander Technique International (ATI) she served on the board of directors, is a Sponsor evaluator of Alexander Technique teachers, and has served on the ATI certification committee. She is now a certified member of American Society of Alexander Technique Teachers. Sarah is an Associate Director of Alexander Technique Associates in Tokyo, Japan where she teachers annually. She is often an invited guest teacher to Alexander Technique schools around the world. Her book, The Alexander Technique, has been distributed worldwide and has been translated into French, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian and German. A new edition in Japanese was published in 2007. She has recently published Moving with Ease an introductory DVD for learning the Alexander Technique, a Japanese version has been distributed by Being Net Press since March, 2012. She has published in Theatre Topics, VASTA Voice and Speech Review, The Alexander Congress Papers, AmSAT Journal, STAT News, ATME Newsetter and ATI’s ExChange. She has been a reviewer for Theatre Topics and for University of Michigan Press. She has presented over sixty panels and workshops at conferences including the Association of Theatre in Higher Education, International Federation of Theatre Research, The International Voice and Speech Teachers Association, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Alexander Technique International Congress and Freedom to Act in New York City.
