Stephanie Kirk earned her Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese from New York University
Her main teaching and research interests include the literature and culture of colonial Latin America with a focus on gender studies and religion. She is the author of Convent Life in Colonial Mexico: A Tale of Two Communities and has also published numerous articles on convent culture and the life and work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. She has edited two collected volumes, Estudios coloniales en el siglo XXI: Nuevos itinerarios and Religious Transformations in the Early Modern Americas (with Sarah Rivett). Her new book, forthcoming with Ashgate Publishing in theNew Hispanisms: Cultural and Literary Studies series, is entitled Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and the Gender Politics of Knowledge in Colonial Mexico. The book examines Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s engagement with masculine institutional knowledge in her engagement with intellectual spheres in New Spain. Currently a fellow at Washington University's Center for the Humanities she is preparing a translation and critical edition of Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora’s convent chronicle Paraíso occidental. Stephanie Kirk is the editor of the Revista de Estudios Hispánicos.
