Dr. Benson earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Lewis University in 1972, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry (Polymers) from the Florida State University in 1978. His dissertation research was entitled "Thermodynamic and Morphological Properties of Bulk and Solution Crystallized Ethylene-Butene Copolymer Fractions". Dr. Benson received Post-doctoral Training in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah in the Biomedical Engineering Center for Polymer Implants. During the period of 1979 - 1983 he was Research Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Adjunct Assistant professor of Bioengineering at the University of Utah. In 1984 he became Director of Research at Vascular International Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1986 he joined the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee. Since joining UT his research has focus on the study of the chemistry, biological response, and morphological changes associated with surface modification of polymeric systems. Analysis and interpretation of the various molecular processes associated with degradation. Dr Benson has authored or co-authored 100 technical papers, edited one book and has contributed to over 75 (20 invited) technical presentations at national and international conferences.
