David Clarke is a civil engineer specializing in transportation, with a particular focus on railways. His 32 years of experience in the transportation area include: management or participation in numerous research projects; teaching undergraduate and graduate level transportation engineering courses; and practice in engineering design, construction, and project management. He teaches railroad engineering and related subjects to both college and professional audiences. Clarke holds appointments as Director of the University of Tennessee Center for Transportation Research and Research Associate Professor in the University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His previous employers include Clemson University, Science Applications International Corporation, and Bechtel Corporation. Clarke is active in a number of professional organizations, including the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Public Works Association, and the Transportation Research Board (TRB), where he recently finished a 6-year term as chair of the Rail Freight Transport Committee. He is a registered engineer in Tennessee and South Carolina.
