Kelly Boyer Ontl is a primatologist and wildlife conservationist studying West African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in anthropogenic landscapes of southeastern Senegal. She is the founder of the Falémé Chimpanzee Conservation (FCC) project and also works closely with the Fongoli Savanna Chimpanzee Project. Much of her research focuses on studying unhabituated chimpanzees using non-invasive methods such as camera traps, nest surveys and interviews with local people. Kelly is currently working to finish her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the Anthropology Department at Iowa State University. Her dissertation work looks at the impacts of artisanal and small scale gold mining on chimpanzee habitat and behavior at the Fongoli research site in southeastern Senegal. Further research addresses the historical dimensions of artisanal gold mining in southeastern Senegal, its relation to the cultural and natural heritage of the local communities, and the implications for chimpanzee conservation.
