Terry Clements joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1993. She teaches graduate and undergraduate design, construction documentation, and cultural landscape studies of the United States. Since 2000, she has led an annual multi-disciplinary education abroad program for students interested in studying the built environment. Her recent scholarship and outreach activities address the educational, legal and regulatory issues that define the discipline and practice of landscape architecture. Recent work includes research on the relationship between multiple intelligence theory and design, the history of women in landscape architecture, and the evolution of landscape architecture education and practice in the United States. Clements has served on state and national ASLA licensure committees (working toward licensure in two states and addressing regulatory impediments to practice), the ASLA Council on Education (addressing concerns about the growth of the profession), and as a member of the Landscape Architecture Magazine Editorial Advisory Committee. As a member of the VA ASLA, she has regularly produced or coordinated conferences, exhibitions, pamphlets and awards programs promoting landscape architecture’s contributions to public and private landscapes. The Virginia Chapter twice awarded her the President’s Award for Service before granting her the Award for Distinguished Service, their highest award., in 2004. She is currently serving as the national ASLA VP of Education. Clements is also a member of the Council of Educators of Landscape Architecture, the Vernacular Architecture Forum, and Phi Beta Delta, the international honorary society of international scholars. Before entering academia, Clements, a licensed landscape architect, practiced in multi-disciplinary firms, landscape architecture design firms and design-build firms in New England and California.
