Holcomb's research is in 20th-century African American literatures, with a critical concentration on modernist period literature, including the Harlem Renaissance, the literature of the Great Depression decade, and postwar writing. He also has written on the Black Arts Movement and black transnational, postmodernist fiction. His courses include Harlem Renaissance, Black Detective Fiction, and Postmodern Blackness.
