Dr. Soo J. You teaches String Techniques courses in the Music Education Division of the School of Music. She is also currently a music teacher at The Langley School, an Independent School in McLean, Virginia where she founded a string instrumental program, and teaches strings from grade 3 to 8, assists the band program and general music. Her teaching and community outreach experience include experience as the Suzuki USM director (a community music school affiliated with The University of Southern Mississippi), a cello instructor at Suzuki Academy in Johnson City, TN and a string instructor at the McLean School in Potomac, MD. Dr. You received her D.M.A. in cello performance from The Catholic University of America with full scholarship and completed CUA Music Education's unique teacher certificate program. Her Master of Music in Cello Performance is from Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY where she received a full graduate assistantship, teaching cello technique and method classes to undergraduates. Her Bachelors degree in Cello Performance is from L’Ecole Normal de Musique de Paris, Paris, France.
Dr. You is privileged to have studied under the guidance of Mr. Michel Strauss, Mr. Philip Muller, Ms. Elizabeth Simkin, Mr. Michael Mermagen, and to have participated in master classes with the Borodin String Quartet, Ying String Quartet, Diaz String Trio, Ms. Anne Martingale, and Mr. Janos Starkar. Her influential professors in Music Education are Dr. Michael Smith, Dr. Sharyn Battersby, and Dr. Molly Weaver. She holds Level I certification in both Kodály and Orff-Schulwerk, and Suzuki Teacher certificate from book 1 to 5. She is actively engaged in community outreach projects by founding a Kinder Violin program and teaching String Orchestra in Mclean, VA, and performs her own cello choir with private students at local nursing homes near Rockville, MD.
