Raymond Leslie Williams specializes in modern Latin American literature, with a more concentrated focus on fiction published since 1944. He has published fifteen single-authored books on topics such as the Colombian novel, postmodern fiction in Latin America, the writing of the Boom, and the latest generation of writers associated with the "McOndo" and "Crack" generation born in the 1960s and who began publishing in the 1990s. His recent publications, related to literary and cultural studies, have been eco-critical approaches to modern Latin American fiction. He has been the recipient of several Fulbright Fellowships to Colombia, and has been awarded the highest honor the Colombian government can bestow upon a foreign citizen, the Order of San Carlos. In 2010 and 2011 he has delivered several lectures related to his 1991 book, The Colombian Novel (which appeared in Colombia as Novela y poder en Colombia) and the writing of 2010 Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. He is currently working on a variety of projects related to eco-critiicism, trauma, biography, postcolonial narratology, and the writings of Vargas Llosa.
