Mona Ghandi is an architect, urban designer, researcher and educator. She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Design and Construction at Washington State University. She has taught architecture, interior design, environmental design, and digital design and fabrication--both at graduate and undergraduate levels-- in the University of California, Berkeley, San Jose State University, and Ohio University where she offered design studios, seminars and workshops in computational design, performance-driven and configurative design, design communication, advanced geometry, material computation, tectonic driven, and data driven design processes. She has more than twelve years of professional experience at different scales ranging over residential, commercial, industrial, urban, and landscape projects. She has collaborated with Autodesk, NADAAA, VAV Studio, Makerbot, and Emerging Objects. Her recent collaboration with Emerging Objects called Star Lounge resulted in one of the world's biggest 3D printed PLA structures. Ghandi’s work has been recognized with several awards and has been published in numerous global publications such as Archdaily, Bustler, Archinect, Transiting Cities’ publication, Inhabitat, I like Architecure, and Memar. Her work was exhibited in different exhibitions such as Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012, Melbourne Design, and Latrobe Regional Gallery Hub. Her interdisciplinary research tries to explore and elaborate on the concept of “Smart Architecture” through computational design while implementing data-driven design processes, parametric design, media technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced digital fabrication technologies. Her research tends to integrate those processes and technologies with material science, behavior, and aggregation to promote highly articulated performative built environment through a synthesis of the digital and physical worlds. Her method of integrating emerging technologies, data, human behavior, and environmental considerations influences, informs and transforms the design strategies of adaptive architecture. She holds a Master of Architecture from University of California, Berkeley, USA and Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tehran, Iran. She has also served as a design critic at UC Berkeley, San Jose State University and California College of the Arts.
