Ph. D., Emory University
Dr. James' primary research interest is in American social and political philosophy. She joined the faculty at the University of Dayton in 2008. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta, GA, after completing her B.A. from Spelman College. Dr. James is the facilitator of UD’s Diversity Across the Curriculum program. She teaches courses in contemporary social and political philosophy and is concerned with using the resources of pragmatism to help frame and attempt to resolve urban issues. She has published on the intersections of classical American pragmatism and black feminist philosophy. In particular, she is interested in how we might pursue the study and enlargement of the many strands of American philosophies. Dr. James is currently working on two major projects. One is a book about U.S. Black feminist pragmatism as a theoretical and practical orientation. The other is an interdisciplinary book on urban divestment and the possibility of justice in U.S. cities in a post-industrial age from a pragmatist perspective.
