Ann Bermingham has published extensively on British art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She has authored Landscape and Ideology: The English Rustic Tradition, 1760-1860 (University of California Press in 1986); Learning to Draw: Studies in the History of a Polite and Useful Art (Yale University Press 2000); and edited Sensation and Sensibility: Viewing Gainsborough’s Cottage Door. With John Brewer she co-edited The Consumption of Culture: Image Object Text 1600-1800. Learning to Draw won the best book award from the Historians of British Art and was named one of the outstanding Academic titles for the year by Choice. Her research interests include the history of landscape painting, the consumption of culture, print culture, popular visual spectacles, and the history of emotions.
