Scott Jarvis holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University and served as Department Chair from 2004 to 2009. His career at Ohio University began in 1998, one year after he completed his Ph.D. in Linguistics at Indiana University with a concentration in Second Language Acquisition and a minor in Semiotics. His current research interests deal primarily with crosslinguistic influence and lexical diversity, and within these areas he has focused particularly on modeling and measuring the relevant constructs. In the domain of crosslinguistic influence, he has also concentrated on the development of methodological tools and procedures that enable the identification and verification of types and instances of transfer that are difficult to detect or whose sources are unclear. One of his current research projects is a longitudinal investigation of the complementary and combined effects of crosslinguistic similarity and cognitive capacities on learners’ ability to process and retain L2 input. In the domain of lexical diversity, his current work focuses on the development of a multidimensional model of the construct and a concomitant multi-factorial measure that correlates highly with human judgments of lexical diversity.
