Babcock is Professor of Economics. In a 39 year career at KSU he has published more than 80 articles in professional journals, along with numerous monographs and technical reports. He has been principal investigator or co-investigator on 33 Federal and State government research grants totaling more than $2 million. Babcock is recognized as a leading national and international authority in three research areas-- the impact of public policy on transportation market shares, agricultural transportation and shortline railroad transportation.
Babcock has received numerous national awards for his transportation research. In 1987, the Transportation Research Forum awarded him (with Ken Lemke) the A.T. Kearney Prize for outstanding research on railroad mergers. In 1989, Babcock received the A.T. Kearney Award (with Wade German) from the Transportation Research Forum for outstanding research on multi-service transportation systems. In 1990, he received (with Wade German) the United Parcel Service Foundation Award for outstanding research in intermodal transportation. In 1994, he received the Burlington Northern Railroad Award from the Transportation Research Forum for outstanding research in agricultural transportation. In 2005, he received the Herbert O. Whitten TRF Service Award(the highest honor bestowed by TRF) for professional contributions to TRF.
