Professor Smith is interested in ethical theory and applied ethics. He has published new editions of two textbooks in the area of ethics. These are Ethical Reflections, 4th ed. (Simon and Schuster, 1997), and Readings in Ethical Issues (Kendall/Hunt, 1998). His interests also include American Philosophy, Thomism and the philosophy of death. In recent years, he has developed a course entitled “Philosophy of Death,” and has written a book entitled Reflections on Death, Dying and Bereavement (Baywood Publishing Company, 2003). He recently completed a sabbatical leave project titled "History of the Philosophy Department from the End of the Second World War to 2007."
