Sharon R. Bird is Professor and Head of Sociology at Oklahoma State University. Her current research examines institutions of higher education and initiatives for enhancing the recruitment and advancement of women and underrepresented minority (URM) faculty and students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In addition to research about enhancing the STEM workforce, Professor Bird is also teaches and conducts research on race/class/gender inequality in society, small business success, scientists’ and engineers’ gendered strategies for career success, and new pedagogical approaches to college student learning. Her recent research appears in journals including Work and Occupations, Gender, Work & Organization, Teaching Sociology, Gender & Society, and Social Psychology Quarterly. Dr. Bird was previously member (2003-2006) of a U.S. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs partnership team between Kharkiv National University (Ukraine) and Iowa State University (USA). The team developed and implemented learning modules that focused on enhancing gender equity in Ukrainian society.
