Prof Clarens is currently a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture. Prof. Clarens received his B.Arch from The Catholic University of America in 1968 and did graduate work at the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture under Ricardo Porro in 1969/70. He is a registered architect in the District of Columbia and in the State of Maryland. He is a member of the AIA. He has been teaching at Howard since 1981. His current teaching responsibilities are in Design and History/Theory. During that time Prof. Clarens has maintained a private practice focused on housing, both private residences and multifamily low income buildings. His work has been published in the Washington Post and in magazines such as “IMAGEN” and “CASSABELLA.” He has served on the Board of Architects of the District of Columbia, and in the Board of Zoning Adjustments (BZA) and on the Zoning Commission. Prof. Clarens has been a Co-Principal Investigator in a seed research grant on the relationship between qualities in the build environment and health disparities in low income communities. Prof. Clarens has travelled extensively in South America, Europe and Asia. Prof. Clarens is married with three children and four grandchildren.
