After graduating from Binghamton University with a joint degree in English and Fine Art, Jack Sherman became an art director and illustrator for The Ithaca Journal and for a wide variety of Cornell University magazines until he was hired by Newsday in 1986. There his primary responsibility was coordinating the work of five on-staff illustrators and commissioning projects from many dozens of freelance artists around the country. He was also art director for Newsday's Op-Edit and Book sections and designed front pages and display feature pages. After retiring from Newsday in 2008, Sherman worked at set building for regional theater and produced handmade toys and furniture. In addition to teaching at St. Johns, he teaches at the journalism school at Stony Brook University.
