Steven R. Brechin is Professor of Sociology. His teaching and research interests include organizational, political and environmental sociology, including the sociology of biodiversity conservation and Climate change. His current research can be organized into three broadly interrelated projects. First, is articulating the environmental sociology of Karl Polanyi, particularly related to his insights found in his opus, The Great Transformation (1944). Second, is critically exploring civil society space at a variety of scales being affected by on-going economic, social, and environmental transformations and responses. Third, is on-going and evolving field research in Belize, Central America where he investigates state-civil society relationships and tensions around nature protection activities under new state emphases of mega-tourism and oil development, along with growing worries over climate change. Dr. Brechin received his graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and prior to coming to Rutgers has held faculty appointments at Princeton University, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, and Syracuse University.
