Rutgers University, 1990 Joint Appointment, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy Joint Appointment, Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine Joint Appointment, Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine 2015 Accomplishments Dr. Walsh has served in numerous professional capacities this past year at the local, state, national and international levels while continuing to support a productive research and training program. With regard to University service, Dr. Walsh continues in her role as Director of the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research (CDAR) and celebrated the opening of the new Robert Straus Behavioral Research Building at Angliana. She also served on University and/or College Committees, including serving as a member of the Scientific Review Committee and as a member of the Pilot Review Committee for the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. She is honored to continue to serve as a recipient of the University of Kentucky Provost’s Distinguished Professor Service Award. Dr. Walsh was also this year’s recipient of the College of Medicine William Willard Award for Educational Contributions to the College of Medicine, University of Kentucky. Dr. Walsh was invited to testify before the Kentucky legislature SB 192 Oversight Committee on evidence-based practices in the treatment of opioid dependence and to meet with the Family Court Judges of Fayette County to discuss medication-assisted treatment. At the national level, Dr. Walsh continues to serve as a Special Government Employee of the Food and Drug Administration and serves in an advisory capacity for new drug approvals of analgesic formulations and risk management approaches for the Anesthetic & Analgesic Drugs Advisory Committee and served on two reviews this past year. She served as a grant reviewer for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), an editorial board member for two journals, an invited reviewer for manuscripts from more than a dozen national and international journals, and as Awards Chair for Division 28 for the American Psychological Association. She is an Advisory Board Member for the PBS Addiction Recovery Media Project that aims to provide national access to treatment services through electronic technology to those with substance use disorders and serves as a scientific advisor to a number of pharmaceutical companies. She continued her service to the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners as a test item writer for the physician Board exam in Addiction Medicine. On the international level, Dr. Walsh served as the Chair of the Improving Outcomes in the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (IOTOD) 13th annual meeting in Manchester, England, that provided training for approximately 300 European physicians in good practices. Dr. Walsh gave invited addresses at the University of Utah, Grand Rounds at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky, and at Reckitt Benckiser in Hull, England, along with several scientific presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Walsh has current research funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the pharmaceutical industry. She received two new NIH grants this year along with two industry contracts as Principal Investigator and new NIH funding as co-PI. She had 8 peer-reviewed manuscripts and commentaries published in respected journals and one practice guideline. With respect to education, Dr. Walsh continues to train students at the high school, pre and post-doctoral levels in the laboratory (with one current M.S. student from College of Pharmacy, one Ph.D. candidate from the IBS Pharmacology program in the College of Medicine), serves on dissertation committees, serves as the Co-Director of a T32 training award in the College of Pharmacy and a training faculty on a T32 in the Department of Behavioral Science, taught Clinical Bioethics in the CCTS Ph.D. program, gives guest classroom lectures, mentors faculty in the College of Medicine and Pharmacy and has participated in several CME activities for physicians and other health professionals.
