Dorothy Brockopp received her BSN, MSN, and PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Before coming to UK, she chaired the problem-based nursing program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She is currently a professor in the UK College of Nursing and holds a joint appointment in the the Department of Anesthesiology in the College of Medicine. Dr. Brockopp's doctoral research, psychological sequelae of the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, was funded by a National Research Service Award. She has been principal investigator on 16 funded studies that expanded on her doctoral work and co-investigator on six funded studies in associated areas. Currently she is principal investigator on a funded project designed to investigate the psychological well-being of women diagnosed with breast cancer pre- and post-diagnosis. Her work on the management of acute cancer pain includes the negative effects of bias among health care professionals when managing pain. Dr. Brockopp's research on behavioral issues related to chronic and life-threatening illness has appeared in a variety of journals, including Oncology Nursing Forum, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Journal of Palliative Care, Cancer Nursing, Western Journal of Nursing Research and the British Journal of Nursing. In her role as chair of the University's President's Commission on Women, Dr. Brockopp presented the findings of a study on women's advancement in academic science and engineering, at the Ninth International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women, in Seoul, Korea in June 2005. Their paper “Creating Chemistry for Change” (Brockopp, Isaacs and Bischoff, 2006) is published in the Journal of Women in Educational Leadership. Dr. Brockopp is first author on 29 publications and coauthor on 16. She has presented at 21 national and 20 international conferences. She coauthored an undergraduate research text, Fundamentals of Nursing Research, for which she received a Book of the Year award from the American Journal of Nursing. In 1996, the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital Department of Nursing named their Annual Nursing Research Award after her. She has received the Carolyn A. Williams Award for Excellence in Research. In 2004 she received the prestigious Sarah Bennett Holmes award from the UK Women's Forum for her outstanding work in promoting the growth and well-being of women at the University and throughout Kentucky. Dr. Brockopp served for seven years as a research consultant for nursing within UK Chandler Hospital and served for two years as associate director of International Affairs at UK. She presently spends 40 percent of her time as the evidence-based practice consultant at a 400-bed community hospital. She designs studies, analyzes data and prepares articles for publication for 20-25 projects on a continuing basis. Dr. Brockopp teaches courses in research methods and guides students in the College's DNP (clinical) and PhD (research) programs.
