Research Area • Environmental Microbiology of inorganic contaminant biotransformation • Anaerobic biodegradation and biotransformation of hazardous pollutants Curriculum Vitae Educational Qualifications • Ph.D., Wageningen University (The Netherlands), 1989 Research Dr. Jim Field's research topic is the anaerobic bioconversion of inorganic and organic pollutants. Current topics include: anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX); anaerobic biotransformation and bioremediation of arsenic; biodegradation and biotransformation of novel munitions compounds; reductive precipitation for the bioremediation of uranium; recovery of nutrients and energy from lipid extracted algea (byproduct of algal biodiesel production); permeable reactive bio-barriers (PRBs) for removing sulfate and heavy metals from acid rock drainage; recovery of metals, rare earth elements and platinum group metals from waste and wastewater. In addition to anaerobic bioconversion, I also work with studying the toxicity of engineered nanoparticles and evaluating the fate of nanoparticles in wastewater treatments systems.
