Cathal J. Nolan is author of the Concise Encyclopedia of World War II , 2 vols (2010); Wars of the Age of Louis XIV, 1650-1715 (2008); Age of the Wars of Religion, 1000-1650, 2 vols (2006); Greenwood Encyclopedia of International Relations, 4 vols (2004); Longman Guide to International Affairs (1995); and Principled Diplomacy: Security and Rights in U.S. Foreign Policy (1992). He is International Relations Editor-in-Chief for Oxford Bibliographies Online (2010—); editor of Ethics and Statecraft (2nd rev. ed., 2004); Great Power Responsibility in World Affairs (2004); Notable U.S. Ambassadors Since 1775 (1997); co-editor of Encyclopedia of U.S. Presidents and Foreign Policy (2007); Shepherd of Democracy? America and Germany in the 20th Century (1992); and founding editor of two book series: International History and Humanistic Perspectives on International Relations. He has written an IR simulation, consulted on several historical documentary films, and authored over two dozen articles in scholarly journals or book chapters on military history, human rights, and U.S. foreign policy. His current project is The Allure of Battle: Delusions of Victory, 1700-1945, for Oxford University Press. Nolan has served as Executive Director of the International History Institute since 1999. He has been a Fellow of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a Barton Fellow in Peace and Security Studies, Department of Foreign Affairs, Canada, and Justice Harry Batshaw Fellow in Human Rights, awarded by the Canadian Human Rights Foundation. He received an Outstanding Teaching Award from the Honors Program of Boston University (2006), and the university-wide Outstanding Teaching Award at Miami University (1991). Nolan is faculty adviser to BU Global Water and Public Health Brigades, with which he works in Honduras twice yearly; he also advises the Undergraduate History Association and Sigma Alpha Lambda.
