Princeton University, Ph.D. Brandeis University, B.A. Ruth Charney is a Professor of Mathematics. Her expertise is in the fields of Geometric Group Theory and Topology. In geometric group theory, one studies groups of symmetries of geometric objects, using the geometry to better understand the algebraic structures of these groups. Charney's work focuses on the geometry of metric spaces of non-positive curvature and their symmetry groups. She enjoys giving public lectures that give insight into the beauty of abstract mathematics to the general public.
