Looking to connect his love of history and music, Dr. Maloney studied Renaissance and Baroque lute with Dr. Douglas Freundlich at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. In addition to working with his own ensembles—Mille Corde, Ensemble Trident, and Arcadia—he has performed with the Harvard University Baroque Chamber Orchestra, Boston University Opera Institute, Revels, Renaissonics, and Cappella Clausura. Maloney also plays lavta and hand percussion in concerts of early Greek music with bass/baritone Panayotis Terzakis. The Boston Globe called him “an excellent scholar, artist, and gentleman all at once.” Maloney spent seven years working as an arts administrator for the Boston Early Music Festival and the New England Conservatory, and as general manager of the internationally renowned early music ensemble, the Boston Camerata. Maloney served as a research associate at the Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University. His dissertation examined the policy process and impact of cultural economic development initiatives in three mid-sized Massachusetts municipalities. In 2012, he presented his findings at a joint National Endowment for the Arts/Brookings Institute conference on the Arts, New Growth Theory, and Economic Development in Washington, D.C., and at the European Network for Cultural Administration Training Centers (ENCATC) annual conference in London, England. Maloney served two three-year terms, through June 2014, on the board of directors of the Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE), where he continues to co-chair the Research and International committees. He currently serves on the board of Mass Creative, a major arts advocacy organization in Massachusetts. He was recently elected to the board of directors of the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centers (ENCATC) in Brussels, Belgium (the largest consortium of arts administration faculty members and programs in the world).
