Eric Anderson is an associate professor of industrial design, co-director of the Master of Products Development (MPD) program, and the Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts. Anderson is also a Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Professor Anderson teaches undergraduate and graduate design studio courses, and, with faculty from CMU’s Mechanical Engineering and Tepper School of Business, he co-teaches the award winning Integrated Product Development (IPD) capstone course in the MPD program. The IPD course focuses on team-based integrated product development among engineering, business, and design disciplines. His research interests focuses on visualization within the context of design. He explores opportunities to shift the paradigm of how visual education is approached and taught in design and to non-design students within interdisciplinary product development teams. His goal is to enable individuals and teams to more effectively and intelligently engaged in critical thinking and problem solving in the design process. Prior to teaching at Carnegie Mellon, Prof. Anderson spent over a decade as a full time design practitioner for corporate departments and consulting firms based in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania (Philadelphia area), where he designed a broad variety of products solutions including medical instruments, tradeshow exhibits, corporate identities, and consumer products. Prof. Anderson holds a BS in Industrial Design from Philadelphia College of Art, and an MA and an MFA in Design Education from The Ohio State University.
