Alexander R. Wilcox Cheek is an Assistant Teaching Professor in Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon University, Qatar. He joined the I.S. faculty from the School of Design, where he received a Masters of Design in 2009. There, he studied information and interaction design, and design theory, which continues to be his area of focus. In Qatar, he teaches design studies, integrating technology with products, services, information, organizations, and human ecologies. In teaching, research, and professional practice, Alex’s work is rooted in the human-centered design approach, emphasizing usability, purpose, and relationships in technology development. He unites many disciplines, traditional and emergent, liberal and applied, across the vast field of design. With David Kaufer (English) and Ananda Gunawardena (Computer Science), Alex co-founded Classroom Salon, an interactive media annotation platform supported by grants from the Gates Foundation, National Science Foundation, Heinz Endowments, and Innovation Works. He also co-founded and serves as CDO of Macromicro, a data visualization company in Boston, which, in 2013, was nominated by HR Tech Europe as one of Europe’s most innovative tech startups. In Doha, he leads the Interaction Design Association’s local chapter, which he also founded.
