Dr. Flytzani-Stephanopoulos joined the Chemical Engineering Faculty of Tufts University as the Raytheon Professor of Pollution Prevention in January 1994. Her previous work experience was with MIT's Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Her research, in the broad field of clean and sustainable energy generation, uses heterogeneous catalysis principles to solve problems in fuel processing and in the production of 'green' chemicals. The main focus of her work is the understanding of metal-metal and metal-oxide interaction at the atomic scale to guide the synthesis of new catalysts that maximize the yields of desired products, while using only trace amounts of expensive noble metals. At Tufts, she directs the Nanocatalysis and Energy Laboratory. In 2009, she was named the inaugural Robert and Marcy Haber Endowed Professor in Energy Sustainability in the School of Engineering. Since 2002, she has served as Editor of Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, and is an Associate Editor of Science Advances.
