Dr. Nan Hatch is originally from Massachusetts. She earned her DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1999. She received her orthodontic certificate in 2003 and PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology in 2005, both from University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Hatch began orthodontic practice in 2003 and came to the University of Michigan in 2005. Dr. Hatch was appointed Assistant Professor in the University of Michigan Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry in 2008. Dr. Hatch’s research interests include basic and translational research in bone biology and the molecular etiology of craniofacial anomalies, as well as development of biologic mediators of orthodontic tooth movement and retention. Dr. Hatch has received multiple awards for her research including the 2007 International Association of Dental Research 1st Place Hatton Award in the Senior Basic Science Category, the 2007 American Association of Dental Research 1st Place Hatton Award in the Post-doctoral Category and the 2008 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Harold M. Frost Young Investigator Award. Dr. Hatch teaches the biology of tooth movement & orthopedic growth modification course and the introduction to research topics course. Her practice philosophy includes using straightwire appliances with head gear or twin block appliances for growth modification. Dr. Hatch also has experience with interdisciplinary adult treatment. Her treatment planning decisions are guided by both the dentition and facial esthetics.
